Setting up for RE DIAL:

Since all ISP phone numbers will sometimes be busy, you should configure your dial-up sessions to automatically re dial when they encounter a busy signal. From My Computer on your desktop open the Dial-Up Networking folder, click once on the JetStream icon to select it then select the Connections menu item, then the Settings option. From there, you can choose the number of times you would like your dial-up sessions to attempt connection.

Authentication Failure:

Do you have your caps lock key on?
You will get an authentication failure when you try and log on if you have your caps lock key on. This is because all names are case sensitive on the UNIX server!

Do you have the correct user name and password entered?
Do not try to use your real name to log on, only the user name you were given when your account was created will work. Also, make sure your email address is NOT entered in the user name field. This is an area for your user name only.

Do you have the correct phone number entered?
Make certain you have entered our dial-up phone number (832-0388) correctly, without the area code.

Connection problems:

You dial continually, but cannot seem to get through:

This can be due to several things.

1) You may have the number entered incorrectly, or with area code information.

Mail Problems:
Please remember that email is a very inefficient way to transfer large files and use alternate methods.

Unable to connect to the server:
First, check to make sure you did not receive an authentication failure.

Second, be sure you actually dialed out! If you do not have a dialer application up and running first, you cannot use E-Mail!

Third, change the POP account configuration in Eudora under Special - Settings - Getting Started to your_user name@jetstream.net

My friend sent me a message. Why didn't I receive it?
There are many reasons for this.
1) Your friend typed in the wrong email address.

2) Or the correct email address with capitals.

3) Make sure you tell your friend the email address is:

your_user name@jetstream.net

If this information is wrong, your friend will get the message back with an error like : "message undeliverable due to ..."

4) Check to see you haven't received an authentication failure, or any other errors connecting, and therefore cannot use e-mail.

5) You can also receive this error if you have more than 4096 messages waiting on our server. If this is a possibility, give us a call, and we will help you with this.

6) The message may be over-sized, like a large graphic. This can cause time-outs in various mail operations, or can fail going through some mail gateways, due to their size limits. The result may be failed mail (which takes a long time to load), that bounces back and forth as an error to both of you for an extended period. You should limit mail sizes to 100K to be sure they will not fail due to these system causes. Keep in mind that mail is only a 7-bit protocol, and very inefficient for anything but text. While you can send attachments, the real way to send them is via FTP.

I sent a message, but it came back saying : "message undeliverable due to ..."
This is the same as your friend sending a message to you and having it "bouncing" back. See the points above.

I cannot send mail with Netscape or Internet Explorer.
Both of these browsers need to be configured to send and or receive mail. Look for an options or preferences command and configure as for Eudora, with the mail server information (mail.jetstream.net).

Disconnecting without warning:

Unexpected disconnection:
Do you have your fax software and call waiting disabled?
If not, please disable them, or these will cause you to be disconnected while a modem session is in progress.

Have you tried a different modem INIT string?
Sometimes the default modem INIT string does not work with your modem.

Try (for windows 95 remove the atz) : atz&f&&c1<, OR atz&k0<, OR atz&k3<, OR atz&f&&c<. Off-brand or bargain modems can prove to be very problematic, and may also fail to connect at full speed.

Windows 95

Disconnecting without warning:

1) Is your modem working? Have you checked all the connections to ensure they are tight? Is there a dial tone on the line? Have you restarted your computer to reset your modem?

2) We could be working on the server here, and had to take a modem or other equipment off-line for a few minutes. If this is the case, please try again in a few minutes.

3) You may have the number entered incorrectly, or with area code information. This is a common problem with Win 98 and you will need to change the DIAL PROPERTIES in the JetStream icon in dial up networking.

General Protection Fault (GPF):

The error message for this is : "this program has performed an illegal operation and will be terminated"

The solution to this problem is a reinstall of your system software, or the program that caused the error.
This fault is caused by an internal execution error in your system software, and has nothing to do with our default internet software. When you use windows 95, and more than one program at once, there is a risk of overwriting information that these programs are using. This error message is the result. Keep in mind that this problem can arise from mis-behaved JAVA applications, malfunctioning plug-ins in your browser, and beta releases of all kinds of internet applications. Netscape betas and plug-ins in particular seem very prone to this problem.

Automating Internet Dial-up

If Windows 95 doesn't automatically dial your provider and establish a connection whenever you use an Internet application, you can edit the Windows 95 registry to enable AutoConnect.

Press the START button, select RUN..., then type REGEDIT.EXE and hit ENTER. This will open the Windows Registry Editor. NOTE: The registry contains all of the settings for Windows 95's operation. Be careful to change only the settings that are mentioned in this tutorial. On the left, you'll see the My Computer icon, with nested folders beneath it. Click on the + sign to open the following folders, in this order:

HKEY CURRENT USER

  • Software
  • Microsoft
  • Windows
  • Current Version

In the Current Version folder, you'll see a folder called Internet Settings. Select it, and the folder's contents will be displayed in the right side window of the Registry Editor. Double click the EnableAutodial option, and change the value to: 01 00 00 00. Now, when you open your favorite 32-bit Internet application, the Windows 95 dialer will fire up automatically!

Windows 3.1

Disconnect without warning

Go into trumpet winsock while holding down the esc key, into the dialer menu, down to setup.cmd. There you will find all the options including modem INIT string, and dial up phone number. Enter : atz, OR atz&k0, OR atz&k3, OR atz&f&&cOR at&f.

General Protection Fault (GPF)

If you get a GPF one or more of your programs has been overwritten in memory. The only way to solve this problem is:
1) If it is Netscape 2.01 or 2.02 then you have visited a site with a TAG that doesn't agree with Netscape. This site is as good as useless to you then.

2) If it is trumpet winsock or any of your other programs, reinstall them. If you continually get this error you will need to reinstall your system software.

Macintosh

Please review the information for All Systems as above. Mac users use Config PPP and Mac TCP or Open Transport with TCP/IP to connect so they must be properly configured. If you are using FreePPP or Config PPP you may simply need to reinstall these programs from time to time especially if you have had unauthorized shutdowns or freeze ups.

If your Mac is freezing up when you get to a certain site or page on the Internet it is probably because of hidden tags contained there. You will have to avoid that page.

If you are using FreePPP or Config PPP you may simply need to reinstall these programs from time to time especially if you have had unauthorized shutdowns or freeze ups.
